Miranda Bay

Author(s): Susan Tarr

Fiction - general

Miranda, a smart, raucous & bolshy young woman, splurges her entire inheritance on a pile of sagging architecture in the Bay of Islands, sight unseen, simply because it bears her name. Now the owner of the old Miranda Bay Sanatorium, Miranda, along with her cousin Pansy, sets out to turn this into a profitable concern. She knows little about running a business, & depends heavily on loyal Pansy's expertise. Keeping one step ahead of bankruptcy and a nervous breakdown, Miranda ploughs into her booze stash. Her geriatric & lascivious financial advisor seizes the opportunity to subtly further undermine her belief in herself. With Pansys help, she pulls herself together & makes some serious decisions - the place must be cleaned up quickly if paying guests are expected to arrive. She hires the local drunk Neville to do some heavy work, but he is accident prone, due to his own booze stash, & threatens everything when his fire gets out of control. The establishment is finally ready to greet the guests. Her clientele - a collection of undertakers, odd artists, sex fiends, happy yet boring little families of mediocrity, dull honeymooners - are not the sophisticated types she'd envisaged, & she grows to despise them. A novel to both laugh & cry over, witty and wicked.
